Two Fireplaces

When not painting artwork on things, I occasionally just paint things. Case in point, our two fireplaces. Both were a little old, dull & dark, so I bought a gallon of off-white (White Viejo, I believe) masonry paint & brightened them up. Notice also various pieces of actual artwork displayed nearby. Photography by Diana.

The Man with the Illegible Face

This is a small painting I started work on around a month or so ago, then got busy with other things. Today I finished it.

The Man with the Illegible Face, 2014, acrylic on polyurethane on wood, 12" x 9".

Cored in Sow's Ear Poetry Review

Just got my copy of The Sow's Ear Poetry Review, Summer 2014 edition in the mail today, & there is my drawing "Cored" from 2003 on page 12, along with a very good poem by Mark Kliewer of Madison, Wisconsin. I knew that this was going to arrive sooner or later, but always a pleasant surprise to find something like that in your mailbox.

I also had some artwork in an earlier issue of this journal a few years ago.

Leda's Return

I bought some new brushes today, which tends to give a fresh feel to ink drawings. I did this loose-ish drawing this evening & took a flash photo, which didn't come out as well as it could have, so I played around with the image in Photoshop a little...

Leda's Return, 2014, brush & ink on paper (with digital manipulation), 16.5" x 14".

The Wings of Time

A new painting that was difficult to photograph—the black paint, whilst appearing to be matt, tends to be quite reflective. The painting features the Tower of Babel (lower left), an angel (center, representing time) & the world (right).

The Wings of Time, 2014, acrylic on board, 14" x 11".

In the Land of the Fisher King (study)

Here is a new small painting, a study for a theme I've used before (but only in drawings), the Arthurian legend of the Fisher King, the injured king in the land of the Holy Grail. I'm intending to do a larger, more detailed painting of this sometime soon, perhaps.

Ian Watt as Posterkrantz in Cut! / NYC

More from college friend Ian Watt (see a couple of postings below) whom I haven't seen in many many years, but is coming to NYC with his solo show CUT! next month. He has put together a promo video of himself in character as the deranged silent movie director, Posterkrantz, answering a series of questions...the video is below:

Ian Watt in NYC

An old friend of mine that I haven't seen since college days (Edinburgh College of Art 1976-1980) is performing his one-man show, CUT!, at Theatre Row in New York City on October 18 at 2pm. I'm planning on going to see him, as it's been more than 34 years since the last time I saw him & there may be catching up to do. I did my degree in Drawing and Painting & he did his in Interior Design, and in the years since he has become much less of an interior designer and much more of an actor/comedian. In any case, below is the flyer for his show for those who may be interested.

The link for his web site:

And here is a link for buying tickets:
(you will have to enter the specific date & time -- Sat Oct. 18 & 2pm -- to purchase the tickets)

...And here is a new drawing.

The Last Days of Summer, 2014, brush & ink on paper, 16.5" x 14".

Pallas Athene

I haven't done much artwork over this summer...been busy with other things. However, here is a new small acrylic painting done on a scrap of plywood...more to come, as it seems I have some work in a group show in a small local gallery coming up soon...

Strange Figurations at the Limner Gallery

I just received a packet of postcards for this show in the mail. My painting ("The Man Who Saw the World From Inside a Protective Bubble") is not on the postcard (it's a group show), so I'm posting it below, along with the front & back of the postcard invite. The Limner Gallery is in Hudson, NY.

Final Version

I believe that this is the finished version of Beyond the Call of Silence...

Beyond the Call of Silence, 2014, acrylic on plywood, 24" x 18". The piece was painted from the background forward, as it turns out. This was not intentional, just the way it happened. The background, the partial figure, the small face & then the leaves appeared pretty much in that sequence. In this way the piece somewhat resembles a collage. Although the piece has numerous flaws & oddities, it hangs together & I am pretty sure that it is done.

Beyond the Call of Silence (continued)

This is the latest iteration of the painting (see posts below)...getting closer still...

A more expressionistic painting of a victim.

A meditation on the folly of power.

Basically, an anti-war painting:

Deathmonger, 2014, acrylic on cardboard, 48" x 36".

The Man Who Saw the World from Inside a Protective Bubble

Another painting on cardboard...I'm thinking of entering this one for the Limner Gallery "Strange Figurations" show...

A painting on cardboard in b/w that relates to the King in Yellow piece:

(Everybody Likes to Visit) Dreamland

This is a painting of a mystical nature on one of the new plywood painting surfaces that I & my pal Jim Stevenson have recently been constructing...Jim built them in his workshop & I sanded & primed them, etc. They're nice to paint on...I may add another layer of gesso to make them less absorbent...or not...

(Everybody Likes to Visit) Dreamland, 2014, acrylic on plywood, 24" x 18".

The King in Yellow

This small acrylic, also on a jute panel, is a companion piece to the one in the previous post (The Queen in Red).

The King in Yellow, 2014, acrylic on jute board, 12" x 9".

The Queen in Red

This is a small acrylic on jute panel that I painted in between priming boards for the next sequence of paintings.

Searcher in the Dark

Dark head illuminated...

The Legend of the Vampire

Another dark head...

The Legend of the Vampire, 2014, acrylic on Kraft card, 11" x 8.5".

War Unending

Since it's around 10 years since I created The War Room (4-wall painted installation), I thought it would be appropriate to revisit the anti-war theme, especially as things don't seem to be necessarily getting any better, globally speaking...

War Unending, 2014, acrylic on cardboard, 4' x 9' (painted on 3 panels, each 4' high by 3' wide).

A small, simple blue painting of a man carrying a mysterious object...

Bearer, 2014, acrylic on jute panel, 12" x 9".

Another in the series of blue, murky paintings on jute. In this one, the title (I tend to think up the titles during the actual painting process) was cut down from more elaborate phrases into the single word "prophecy", which seemed to sum up the painting, whilst making it more enigmatic at the same time.

Prophecy, 2014, acrylic on jute panel, 12" x 9".

Woman with a Dangerous and Mysterious Egg

This could be the beginning of a new small series of murky, crepuscular images done on jute panels, where the texture of the panel adds to the atmosphere of the artwork...

Woman with a Dangerous and Mysterious Egg, 2014, acrylic on jute panel, 12" x 9".

Nocturne Ascending

A simple monochrome painting on Kraft cardstock...this one almost painted itself...

On my desk

Here is a photo of part of my desk this morning. I thought it made an interesting little arrangement...the copy of "Listening to Night Whistles" by Tina Hacker (with my Train drawing on the front), & the two recent small paintings, "Sower of the Systems" (left) & "Stellar Blue" (right). See posts below for more information on these items.

Monday, June 02, 2014

Sower of the Systems

Title borrowed from George Frederic Watts...a small painting (8 inches high & 6 inches wide) of a face made up of stars.

Sower of the Systems, 2014, acrylic on board, 8" x 6".

Young Emperor with Sad Eyes

Another melancholy drawing.

The Return of the Alchemist

I'm not sure that he ever really went away...but here he is again...

The Return of the Alchemist, 2014, brush & ink on paper, 16.5" x 14".

A somewhat iconic small painting of a head breaking the surface of water...a returning...

Surfacing, 2014, acrylic on board, 11" x 8.5".

The goddess Ishtar (ancient goddess of fertility, love, war and sex) brought to life in a small painting on card.

Ishtar, 2014, acrylic on card, 11" x 8.5".

This is a faux woodcut (created digitally in Photoshop) from the recent small painting (see below), Stellar Blue.

Starlight, 2014, "faux woodcut" digital image.

Tuesday, May 20, 2014

A small painting of a head done on Kraft card stock over an ink drawing of same that wasn't working very well. The extra layers of acrylic (and a little ink) made the difference.

Acolyte, 2014, acrylic & some ink on card, 11" x 8.5".

Figure Among Trees

This is another new small acrylic painting where the shapes are might be a single piece or might be the start of a small series...

Figure Among Trees, 2014, acrylic on board, 12" x 9".

Stellar Blue

New small painting on board where the woman's hair is made of stars...

Stellar Blue, 2014, acrylic on board, 12" x 9".

Little Dreamer

This is an ink drawing based on a small painting I did recently, which in turn was inspired by Fernand Khnopff and Odilon Redon.

Little Dreamer, 2014, brush & ink on paper, 16.5" x 14".
